How Often Should I feed My Snake?

How often should I feed my snake? While it may seem like a simple question, there are a lot of variables when it comes to the frequence of your snakes feeding schedule.

Snakes in optimal condition should be feeding on a regular schedule, but the age, size, and girth of your snake will determine how much and how often you should be feeding it.

Snakes, how often should they eat header

Age of Your Snake

In general, the younger a snake is the more often it will feed. Baby snakes, because they’re in an important growing phase, should be fed approximately every 5 to 7 days. As they reach one year of age, your snakes feeding can be decreased to approximately once every 10-14 days. Be cautious not to overfeed your snake when they’re babies. While it may seem tempting to rapidly feeding your snake in order for them to grow faster, but this could cause serious medical conditions and is not recommended.

Size and Girth Matter

The appropriate size of snake food is 1.5 times the girth of the snake. For example, if the girth of your snake is the size of a dime, then the snakes food should have a girth the size of a nickel. It is important to feed your snake the appropriate size food. If the food is too large, it’s likely they will regurgitate it. Choose live or frozen snake food that is the appropriate size and this will help get them on a regular feeding schedule.

Other Feeding Factors

Creating a healthy feeding schedule for your snake is based on more factors than age and girth. Because of the vast species of snakes and the rate they grow, feeding is completely unique to your snake. Here are some other factors to consider when creating a feeding schedule.

  • Smaller adult snakes typically eat more often than larger snakes
  • Female snakes can eat more often leading up to breeding season
  • Environmental changes can affect feeding schedules
It’s important to talk to your veterinarian about your snakes individual factors to create a healthy feeding schedule.
